St. Johnsbury firefighters get $178K grant for new gear.

The Associated Press announced last week that Federal emergency officials are giving firefighters in St. Johnsbury more than $178,000 for new equipment.

The Caledonian-Record reported the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to the St. Johnsbury Fire Department was recently announced. The town is providing nearly $9,000 in matching funds.

The money is meant to help the department replace more than two dozen air-packs, which are used to enter burning buildings and in other dangerous environments, including gas, chemical or carbon monoxide leaks.

The packs have a face mask, voice amplifiers and two air bottles.

The fire station received the packs last week. Firefighters are working to prepare them for service next week.

The state Department of Public Safety’s Fire Academy received $500,000 in federal money for a burn building and training facility.
