FreshTracks Capital’s Road Pitch sends a team of Business Bikers on the Road for a 4 day journey trip across Vermont in search of the best and brightest entrepreneurs. The St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce working with our Town Offices secured a spot in this statewide entrepreneurial competition to celebrate the ingenuity, creativity, and talent within our community.
Road Pitch is an annual event put on by Fresh Tracks Capital where venture capitalists and business savants tour the state on motorcycles seeking out our brightest most innovative business minds with hopes of funding the next Green Mountain Coffee or Ben & Jerry’s. Cash prizes will be awarded at the St. Johnsbury event, and local winners in each community will have a chance to compete for over $4,000 in cash prizes at the state competition in October 2016.
At a pre-screening event held last month, entrepreneurs explained their concepts before a panel of business and finance experts. Each pitch described new products, ideas, and process with hopes of making their dreams come true. Joe Kasprzak, Assistant Town Manager, explains “We were very impressed with the quality and diversity of the applications we received. All of them were good.”
From the initial pool, four finalists were selected to meet with the Road Pitch venture capitalists this week. They have been working with the St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce to fine-tune their presentation so that it meets the 5-7 minute format. “We’re excited about the quality of these fresh ideas,” says Chamber Director Tara Holt. “Each one offers the possibility of a successful start-up that will benefit St. Johnsbury.”
The finalists include a new device to give athletes, coaches and broadcasts a way to analyze the physics of a performance in real-time; a series of ten books explaining mathematical concepts using fun hands-on and drawing techniques; a radically different style chimney brush; and a robust temporary shelter that can be assembled without electricity or expertise. “Each of these concepts has the potential to make a difference,” says Mike Welch, Senior Project Manager at Northern Community Investment Corporation. “The range of ideas and the talents of each presenter who responded to the initial call for concepts was truly impressive. It was tough to select the finalists.”
“St. Johnsbury has a long history of creative ideas,” says Anna Rubin, Vice President of the St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce. “The Fairbanks brothers, Thaddeus and Erastus, patented and produced the platform scale and built their fortune here.” The St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce is working with local and regional economic development resources to support new and emerging businesses.
The St. Johnsbury Chamber of Commerce is both a Designated Downtown organization, part of the National Main Street Program, and a Chamber of Commerce. By combining the work of a Chamber with the structure of a Designated Downtown organization, the Chamber serves the people and businesses of St. Johnsbury efficiently and effectively.
